At around 1:45 p.m. on Tuesday, approximately 30 Union Pacific rail cars derailed about two miles east of Santa Rosa, New Mexico.

Tim Pipher, an Albuquerque native who witnessed the incident and captured the photo, calls it a day he’ll never forget.

He said he was golfing at the only golf course in Santa Rosa when he saw a train rumbling along the west.

“I hit my ball, glanced back, and it was just a zig-zag like Tinker Toys all piled up,” Pipher said.

Pipher said he and the golf course employee were the only ones there. He said there was no detectable noise when the derailment took place, but a little bit of a gas odor from a car on the train that’s used to keep things cool.

Officials say the train crew was not injured and the incident is still under investigation.
