Two Shiprock men found dead after drowning on Sunday

Two men were found dead after going swimming in an irrigation canal.

Navajo police say they received a report that two male individuals went missing after swimming in the irrigation canal.

Search efforts resumed Monday morning, and before 8:30 a.m., both bodies were recovered deceased and confirmed to be the two missing individuals.

The men have not yet been identified.

The incident remains under investigation.

Police want to remind the public that canals and waterways can be extremely dangerous.

Strong currents, deep water, steep embankments and hidden hazards can quickly create life-threatening situations, even for experienced swimmers.

As temperatures continue to rise, the Navajo Police Department also urges everyone to take precautions during extreme heat.

* Do not swim or enter canals.

* Keep children and pets away from canal banks and waterways.

* Closely supervise children whenever they are near water.

* Stay hydrated and take frequent breaks if working or spending time outdoors.

* If you witness a water emergency, call the nearest NPD District or call 911 immediately. Do not enter the canal to attempt a rescue.
