The city of Albuquerque is helping families start the school year off right with its annual “Cruzin’ Into the School Year” event on Saturday, Aug. 1.

Thousands of free backpacks and school supplies will be given to students while supplies last.

It will take place at two locations Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The West Mesa Community Center at 5500 Glenrio Road NW and the Community Center at 7505 Kathryn Ave. SE.

Leaders at the West Mesa Community Center say they give away at least 1,500 backpacks each year.

“As we all know, everything is very expensive these days,” Therese Chavez said. “So we’re just hoping that this event can ease that financial burden for families and also just to hear from different resources that will help them throughout the school year.”

Families must pre-register to receive free backpacks and school supplies, which will be distributed while supplies last. Students must be present to receive their backpack and supplies.

For more information, visit the city’s website.
