Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid shared a positive update after the wife of offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy was shot over the weekend.

Mia Bieniemy was shot in her Virginia home on Sunday. The couple’s son, Elijah Bieniemy, was arrested and charged in connection with the shooting.

Her injuries were described as serious, and court documents confirmed she needed surgery after she was shot twice, including once in the chest.

Reid shared an update on her condition Wednesday after the first day of full-team practice at training camp.

“She’s doing great,” he said. “She’s doing better and great from where she was. Out of the ICU unit and making progress, so we’re happy about that.”

Reid, who has known the Bieniemy family for years, described Mia Bieniemy as a “saint” and “one of God’s good blessings” the day after the shooting.

Eric Bieniemy, who was in St. Joseph for training camp at the time of the shooting, quickly traveled back to Virginia to be with his wife.

“EB is still with her, and that part’s important, that that’s taking place,” Reid said. “Eric will be back soon enough to jump in there and do his thing, but he’s got to take care of that first.”

Pass game coordinator Joe Bleymaier has stepped in to oversee the offense while Eric Bieniemy is away. Reid said he has full confidence in Bleymaier and other staff members to take over, though Eric Bieniemy’s presence is still missed.

“Eric’s a big part of this. Love having him here. But right now, it’s important that he takes care of business, and everybody knows that,” Reid said.
