Harwood Museum expands to Santa Fe with acquisition of historic property
The Harwood Museum of Art has acquired the Peyton Wright gallery property in Santa Fe, giving the Taos-based museum a future presence in the state capital
SANTA FE, N.M. —
The Harwood Museum of Art is expanding beyond Taos with the acquisition of the historic Peyton Wright Gallery property, also known as the Spiegelberg House, on East Palace Avenue in Santa Fe.
Museum leaders say the move is more than just adding a second location; they are also aiming to strengthen the connection to the University of New Mexico and broaden the reach of Taos art.
“Trying to bridge that distance and allow the Harwood to engage more with main campus is one of the motivations,” Executive Director Juniper Leherissey said.
Leherissey said Santa Fe offers the museum a chance to connect with a larger arts audience while keeping its primary home in Taos.
She called the opportunity a major step forward for both the museum and the university.
“The chance to join so many exemplary arts institutions in the city will be truly transformational for the Harwood and UNM,” Leherissey said.
The new site is not expected to open for another two to three years. In the meantime, leaders say the museum will focus on planning, partnerships and community input as the project takes shape.
