The Tedeschi Trucks Band have been forced to cancel two upcoming festival appearances after singer-guitarist Susan Tedeschi announced she “had an appendix scare.” The group will miss their scheduled performances at this weekend’s FloydFest in Virginia and Newport Folk Festival in Newport, Rhode Island.
Tedeschi shared news of the canceled gigs and of her health on social media on Monday.
“Here with some unfortunate news. I had an appendix scare, and I’ve been told I need surgery to have it removed. It’s a very common procedure, of course, and I’ll be okay, but sadly it does mean we have to cancel our appearances at Newport Folk and FloydFest,” she wrote on Instagram.
“I never cancel shows and don’t like inconveniencing our fans, band and crew. So, I need to take care of this now so it doesn’t become something more serious later,” she continued. “We promise we’ll make it up to y’all as soon as we can. I’ll be back on my feet before you know it, and we’ll see you out there soon.”
Tedeschi and her husband, the guitarist Derek Trucks, lead the Tedeschi Trucks Band. In March, they released their latest album, Future Soul, and have been touring in support of the record all summer, including a stop at Bonnaroo in June that was nearly derailed by a severe storm. During an appearance on Rolling Stone’s Nashville Now podcast, Tedeschi and Trucks talked about touring with such a large band — the group features 12 members. “When you roll into town with a 12-piece band … people know you mean business,” Trucks said.
Tedeschi also recalled a memorable experience on the road with Bob Weir shortly after she gave birth to her and Trucks’ son Charles. Weir had offered her psychedelic mushrooms. “I was nursing on that first tour. He’s like, ‘You want some?’ I’m like, ‘Dude, I’m nursing!’ [And he’d say,] ‘Oh, OK, I’ll do yours too,’” Tedeschi said. “I’m like, ‘Wait, you just took a handful of mushrooms. We’re walking out on Madison Square Garden, you’re about to play ‘Shakedown Street,’ and you just did a heroic dose of mushrooms. How do you even perform?’”
The Tedeschi Trucks Band are currently slated to return to the road for a pair of shows at Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, Colorado, on July 31 and Aug. 1.
