IN FACT, STATE TREASURER STACY GARRITY RETURNED THE U.S. ARMY GOOD CONDUCT MEDAL RIBBON AND LAPEL PIN BELONGING TO SERGEANT GEORGE PERSHING TO PERSHING’S SON, FRED. THE DECORATIONS WERE DISCOVERED IN AN ABANDONED SAFE DEPOSIT BOX AS PART OF THE TREASURY’S UNCLAIMED PROPERTY PROGRAM. THE TREASURY DID SOME RESEARCH AND WAS ABLE TO CONNECT WITH FRED. THIS IS REALLY SPECIAL BECAUSE, YOU KNOW, THERE’S SO MUCH TIME THAT GOES BY. AND SO THE MORE THAT WE CAN CONTINUE TO TELL THE STORIES OF OUR VETERANS. AND PERSHING WAS AMONG THE TROOPS WHO STORMED UTAH BEACH DURING THE D-DAY INVASION OF NORMANDY, LATER FOUGHT IN THE BATTLE OF THE BULGE. Pennsylvania Treasury reunites family with lost WWII medal from D-Day veteran George Pershing
A World War II medal that had been lost for years was returned to the family of Sgt. George Pershing during a special ceremony. Pennsylvania State Treasurer Stacy Garrity returned the U.S. Army Good Conduct Medal, along with its ribbon and lapel pin, to Pershing’s son, Fred. The decorations were discovered in an abandoned safe-deposit box as part of the Treasury’s unclaimed property program. The Treasury conducted research and was able to connect with Fred to return the items. “This is really special because, you know, there’s so much time that goes by. So, the more that we can continue to tell the stories of our veterans,” Garrity said. Pershing was among the troops who stormed Utah Beach during the D-Day invasion of Normandy and later fought in the Battle of the Bulge. The Army Good Conduct Medal was established in June 1941 for exemplary conduct, efficiency, and fidelity, or for those who honorably completed three years of active service.
