Why Was Taylor Swift Booed at Alan Jackson’s Final Concert?

Taylor Swift‘s video tribute to Alan Jackson was met with cheers, boos and some questions about why she was even included. A dip into modern country music history reveals answers.

Keith Urban, Kenny Chesney and Dale Earnhardt Jr. also paid tribute to Jackson with a video message that not nearly as many people are talking about today. It was all part of Jackson’s Last Call: One More for the Road – the Finale show at Nissan Stadium in Nashville on Saturday (June 27).

• Jackson’s retirement is a result of his Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease diagnosis, first revealed to fans in 2021.
• A condensed version of the concert will air on NBC later this year.
• Carrie Underwood, Luke Combs, George Strait and Lainey Wilson were among the superstars who showed up to sing a song for him.

Videos shared to social media show a mixed response to Swift’s tribute. Early boos compete with cheers and then there’s just soft unrest as she explains why she loves his song “Drive” in particular.

“I appreciate you so much for the ways that you have just treated me and other artists and writers with such support and encouragement over the years and I … just appreciate you so much,” she says to close.

Jackson’s support for Swift is what we zeroed in on.

An internet search for Alan Jackson and Taylor Swift collabs returns a number of unsubstantiated artificial intelligence results, but we did find two confirmed interactions of significance.

The first came in 2008 at a taping of CMT Giants, in Jackson’s honor. Swift performed “Drive” that night. Per the Boot, she was one of more than a dozen celebs to take the stage — President George W. Bush even taped a show of appreciation!

A single performance of a hit is hardly a sign these two are besties, however. In reality, she was one of country music’s hottest stars at the time and CMT could very well have invited her just to boost ratings.

Flash-forward just a few years to the 2011 Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. Jackson and Garth Brooks were honorees and Swift was again on hand.

This time, she took the stage to sing “Where Were You (When the World Stopped Turning” at an event held 10 years and a month after the 9/11 terrorist attacks that inspired this Jackson reflection.

Once again, Jackson and Swift stopped to share a laugh.

It’s not hard to find more that night either. Swift is closer in age to Jackson’s daughters than she is to him, but Jackson always seemed to respect her as a songwriting peer.

Fans of traditional country artists tend to expand their favorite artist’s appreciation for a certain type of music into criticism of artists that compete with that style.

An example of this is the 2016 CMA Awards, where Jackson was rumored to have walked out during Beyoncé’s performance even though logistically this was unlikely.

Thus the gap between Swift’s current brand of music (mainstream pop) and Jackson’s (unapologetically country) feels too wide for the two professionals to bridge. It’s a silly thing that gets debunked all the time — see the track list for Post Malone’s F1 Trillion album.

Jackson clearly appreciates the nuances of Swift’s talents. She was a fairly traditional country singer over her first two albums, and only later turned toward pop music. Just because the Country Music Hall of Famer is unapologetically country doesn’t mean he can’t see and appreciate non-country talent.

He may even foster and support non-country talent, which is why she was invited to say a few words at his final show. The boo-birds just insulted someone Jackson — or Team Jackson — hand selected to be there. At best, that’s rude.
