Heat Advisories continue for parts of the state, watching for gusty storms later today too
Heat should really step down tomorrow as better chances of storms are expected
NO. YOU KNOW, THERE’S IT DOESN’T LOOK LIKE THERE’S ANY RAIN TRYING TO STREAM OUT UNDERNEATH THAT CLOUD, BUT WE’LL LIKELY CATCH SOME LATER ON THIS AFTERNOON. BRIGHTENING SKIES HERE OVER ALBUQUERQUE. 553, I BELIEVE, IS OUR SUNRISE. WE’LL START TO BACK OFF ON THE HEAT AS SOME STORM CHANCES BUILD IN. HOWEVER, THOSE STORM CHANCES WILL BE ASSOCIATED WITH SOME VIRGA POTENTIAL. THE THREAT OF DRY LIGHTNING STRIKES AND ALSO SOME SEVERE WEATHER. THE WEEKEND IS GOING TO BRING AN END TO THIS KIND OF UNSETTLED STRETCH, BUT THE WEEKEND LOOKS LIKE IT WILL BE WINDY ON US. THERE GOES THE ORANGE SHADED DRY AIR, SO WE’VE GOT THE MOISTURE CREEPING BACK IN THE UPPER HIGH AND THE HEAT DOME. IT’S A LITTLE FURTHER TO THE SOUTH TODAY. SO ESPECIALLY IN NORTHERN NEW MEXICO, WE WILL TAKE A FEW DEGREES OFF THOSE AFTERNOON HIGHS AND KEEP IT BELOW 100 IN ALBUQUERQUE. STILL SOME TRIPLE DIGITS DOWN SOUTH. LOOK AT THAT AFTERNOON FLARE UP OF SKIES. PROBABLY A LITTLE OVERDONE HERE ON OUR COMPUTER MODELS, BUT THERE WILL BE ISOLATED STORMS IN WESTERN AND NORTHERN NEW MEXICO AND THE STORMS THAT FIRE OUT EAST. BOY, THEY COULD HAVE SOME SERIOUS PUNCH TO THEM. LOOK AT T OR C SILVER CITY, I-10 CORRIDOR, CRUCES OVER TOWARDS CARLSBAD AND HOBBS. IT’S ANOTHER ROUND OF HEAT ADVISORIES WITH FORECAST HIGHS MAYBE AS HIGH AS 109 110 RANGE ON WESTERN AND NORTHWESTERN NEW MEXICO. WE HAVE THE POTENTIAL FOR SOME HEAVY RAINFALL. IT’S A BIGGER THREAT OUT IN EASTERN NEW MEXICO. I THINK MORE THE STATE IS IN ON THAT THREAT. BUT I KNOW YOUR HEAVY RAIN POTENTIAL IS ALSO CO-LOCATED WITH THE THREAT OF DRY LIGHTNING STRIKES WEST OF ALBUQUERQUE, UP TOWARDS THE FOUR CORNERS, AND LOOK AT THE SEVERE WEATHER RISK OF THREAT AREA. MUCH OF EAST, CENTRAL AND ESPECIALLY NORTHEASTERN MEXICO INCLUDED ON THAT MAIN THINGS WE’LL BE WATCHING FOR TODAY IS VERY STRONG WIND GUSTS AND LARGE HAIL. THE ISOLATED TORNADO THREAT IS ON THE VERY LOW END. FORTUNATELY, WILL TEND TO COME TO AN END OVERNIGHT, AND WE SHOULD TEND TO CLEAR OUT BY THURSDAY MORNING. LOWS 5060. A LITTLE COOLER THAN THIS MORNING. LOOK AT THE DROP IN THE HIGHS IN NORTHERN NEW MEXICO. WE’LL KEEP IT BELOW 90. SANTA FE AND TAOS AND BARELY ABOVE 90 FOR ALBUQUERQUE. STILL UP AROUND 100 DOWN SOUTH. SCATTERED ISOLATED STORMS FIRING AROUND THE ENTIRE STATE TOMORROW AFTERNOON. STILL RIDING OUT THE POTENTIAL FOR SOME DRY LIGHTNING STRIKES. AREAS WEST AND NORTHWEST OF ALBUQUERQUE. HEAVY RAIN THREAT EXPANDS TOMORROW, AND THE SEVERE WEATHER RISK AREA THAT DECREASES SIGNIFICANTLY, COVERING ONLY THAT FAR NORTHEAST CORNER OF THE STATE. SO THAT’S A LITTLE SLIVER OF SOME GOOD NEWS FOR THURSDAY AFTERNOON. WELL, IN ADDITION TO THAT DROP IN THOSE HIGH TEMPERATURES FOR COORS FORECAST HERE, WE ARE GENERALLY IN THE 90 TO 95 DEGREE RANGE, NOT QUITE AS HOT AS TODAY. WATCH FOR SCATTERED STORMS. RAIN COULD BE HEAVY LOCALLY AND WE COULD CATCH A DRY LIGHTNING STRIKE. SO IT’S LIKE THAT DUAL THREAT THING. ANOTHER STORM CHANCE TOMORROW WILL SHUT IT DOWN. BY FRIDAY. IT LOOKS LIKE WEEKEND DOES LOOK DRY. LOWER 90S. HERE’S SOUTHWEST NEW MEXICO. IT’S YET ANOTHER DAY OF HEAT ADVISORIES FOR MOST OF US. 98 SILVER CITY UP AROUND 105 OFF THE MOUNTAINS. WE DO DROP THE NUMBERS BY ABOUT FIVE TOMORROW, BRINGING A BETTER STORM CHANCE TODAY. MAINLY JUST TALKING ABOUT THE THREAT OF VIRGA BY FRIDAY, IT LOOKS LIKE THE STORMS FIRE EAST WEEKEND HAS US IN THE LOWER 90S. BOTH DAYS HERE, SOUTHEAST NEW MEXICO. AND YOU KNOW, WE’RE NOT BURNING THE THERMOMETER WITH THOSE HEAT ADVISORIES EXCEPT FOR CARLSBAD, WHERE WE’RE UP AT 107. BUT IT’S STILL HOT INTO THE TRIPLE DIGITS AND ISOLATED STORM CAN’T BE RULED OUT. THEY MAINLY STAY TO OUR NORTH. LITTLE BETTER CHANCE OF A THUNDERSHOWER TOMORROW. AND YOU KNOW, WE’RE BELOW 105 THROUGH FRIDAY BEFORE WE SPIKE TO 105 AND GET BACK ON THOSE HEAT ADVISORIES. IMPACT HEAT EXPECTED BOTH WEEKEND DAYS. NORTHEAST NEW MEXICO RATON AT 88. VEGAS AROUND 90. STILL, THOUGH, IN THOSE MIDDLE AND UPPER 90S FOR THE I-40 CORRIDOR, WATCH FOR SCATTERED SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS THAT COULD BE SEVERE WITH THE STRONG WINDS AND LARGE HAIL. TOMORROW, THE SEVERE WEATHER THREAT IS LOWER, THE TEMPERATURES A LITTLE LOWER, BUT THE RAIN CHANCES PROBABLY A LITTLE BIT HIGHER. FRIDAY, A FEW LEFTOVER STORMS. WEEKEND DOES LOOK DRY, BUT SUNDAY COULD BE AN AWFULLY WINDY DAY. WE’RE GOING TO IMPACT YOU FOR THE POTENTIAL FOR SOME 40 AND 50 MILE PER HOUR WIND GUSTS. NORTH CENTRAL NEW MEXICO, UPPER 80S LOWER 90S NOT QUITE AS HOT AS TODAY. WE’RE STILL AT 98 IN THE VALLEY, THOUGH. STORM CHANCES IN PLAY FOR THE NEXT FEW WEEKEND DOES DRY OUT. ALBUQUERQUE METRO NOT QUITE HITTING 100 AT THE SUNPORT, BUT GOSH, WE’LL BE CLOSE. IT’S GOING TO BE ANOTHER SCORCHER OUT THERE, NO DOUBT. RAIN CHANCES AROUND ALBUQUERQUE, JUST IN THE 10% RANGE, BUT WE COULD SEE SOME VIRGA AND SOME WIND GUSTS AND BLOWING DUST LATE IN THE DAY, SO WE’LL HAVE TO MONITOR THAT POTENTIAL 30% STORM CHANCE TOMORROW, 20% OR FRIDAY. THERE’S THE WEEKEND DRYIN

Early morning temperatures have held at around 70 degrees or more for most of us, so it is a little warmer early today than yesterday. Those numbers will let us easily launch back into the 90s and 100s around the state again this afternoon, rivaling yesterday’s highs with the hottest temperatures in Southern New Mexico where we once again will be riding out a heat advisory through the afternoon and evening. We will also have to watch for some afternoon storms today; however virga potential and a dry lightning strike threat will need to be monitored, and in Eastern New Mexico there could be severe thunderstorms with large hail and very strong winds. Right now, it looks like the threat for an isolated tornado is very low.Tomorrow brings a better chance of thunderstorms with a more significant temperature drop, especially for the northern and central part of the state. We could still see some dry lightning strikes though in the western part of the state and more severe weather out east, however the severe risk area is much smaller than today. Some storms could still fire on Friday, but it mainly looks like the central and eastern part of the state will see those leftover storm chances.Drier air is still expected to move in from the west for the weekend, and with no storms to keep the heat down we will see highs near 100 degrees again around the Albuquerque metro. The issue with the weekend afternoons will be the wind gusts that will likely be in the 20-25mph+ range for most of us, providing that blow dryer or hair dryer effect making it a bit uncomfortable. Looking ahead to early next week, we may see some storms try to move back into the southeast corner of the state on Monday, with storms possibly moving back into the central part of the state again by Tuesday.
