Construction is underway on a new solar energy project at Alameda Open Space to generate renewable power and amenities for visitors. The project, led by the Albuquerque Bernalillo County Water Utility Authority, will install solar canopies over portions of the parking lot near Alameda and Rio Grande boulevards. Officials said the system will supply a significant portion of the electricity needed to operate the nearby Raw Water Pump Station, which moves Rio Grande water to a treatment facility. In addition to producing energy, the project includes public benefits such as covered parking and two electric vehicle charging stations available at no cost on a first-come, first-served basis. The work is expected to continue through September. Some parking areas may be temporarily unavailable during construction, although alternative parking remains accessible nearby.
