Police arrest man after barricade at vacant apartments
Milton Bryant, 42, told police he heard their commands but didn’t want to be captured because there were warrants for his arrest.
Albuquerque police arrested a man who barricaded himself inside vacant apartments at the Barcelona Suites Apartments in Northeast Albuquerque on Saturday morning, court documents said. Officers responded to the property at 900 Louisiana Boulevard Northeast around 10:40 a.m. after the security manager reported seeing a broken window and a man, later identified as Milton Bryant, 42, underneath it. Police initially did not find anyone and left, but returned an hour later when the security manager showed them photos of Bryant and broken windows, according to the documents. As police spoke with the property manager, who confirmed no one had permission to be there, Bryant was seen climbing out of a window. Police ordered him to come down, but he went back inside. While officers established a perimeter, Bryant attempted to leave the building again but was spotted and re-entered through a glass door, the documents said. K9 officers arrived and apprehended Bryant, who was taken to the University of New Mexico Hospital for medical clearance, according to the documents. After being read his Miranda rights at the hospital, Bryant allegedly agreed to speak with police. According to police, he said he had been outside the building in the shade to cool off, admitted that a bicycle underneath the window was his, and that he had entered the building through a broken window. Bryant told police he had heard their commands but did not want to be captured because he knew there were warrants for his arrest, the documents said. The property manager told police that the estimated value of two broken windows and two broken glass doors totaled $2,200. Bryant was charged with burglary (commercial), breaking and entering, larceny (over $500/under $2,500), criminal damage (over $1,000), resisting/evading/obstructing an officer, two felony warrants, and one misdemeanor warrant.
