Police arrest armed man in Village of Cuba

Police in Cuba, New Mexico say Carlos Sanjurjo was allegedly pointing firearms at members of the public and firing shots into the air.

Law enforcement took extra precautions Friday, responding to reports of an armed man who was allegedly pointing his weapon at members of the public and firing shots into the air, a Cuba Police Department news release said.The suspect, Carlos Sanjurjo, 66, refused commands from CPD officers when they arrived. Because of concerns for public safety, police decided to treat the situation as if he was armed and barricaded, the release said.CPD was joined by personnel from the Sandoval County Sheriff’s Office and New Mexico State Police, and eventually Sanjurjo was taken into custody without injury to him, officers, or members of the public. A search warrant was executed and multiple firearms related to the incident were seized, the release said.Sanjurjo was charged with negligent use of a deadly weapon; resisting, evading or obstructing an officer; and disorderly conduct.
