Bernalillo County in process of buying former animal hospital
New Animal Care Services Adoption and Education Center planned at 9901 Montgomery Blvd. NE
Bernalillo County expects to close on the purchase of the former VCA Animal Hospital in the Northeast Heights by the end of June for $2 million. The new Northeast Bernalillo County Animal Care Services Adoption and Education Center aims to accommodate the increased demand for services and programs from county’s Animal Care Services Department, a Bernalillo County news release said. The new facility will have animal housing areas, veterinary medical space, offices, indoor and outdoor play areas, a reception area, ample parking, storage, public education space, and areas where future revenue-generating opportunities can take place, the release said. “This Northeast Heights location will make adoptions more convenient and accessible while expanding opportunities for volunteers,” said County Commissioner Eric Olivas, who represents District 5. “Animal education programs and low- or no-cost veterinary services will be brought closer to Albuquerque residents. As an added benefit, we will revitalize a building that has been vacant for a couple of years, and bring new activity to the Montgomery corridor through adoptable pets and community engagement.” The department’s Animal Care and Resource Center at 3001 2nd St. Southwest will remain open and continue providing services. It was designed to serve 2,500 animals annually, but now cares for an average of 300 animals daily, and more than 6,500 animals a year.
