
Bernalillo County Fire Rescue personnel are at the scene of a large fire at a recycling plant in the South Valley, a BCFR social media post said. The plant is located off Broadway Boulevard just south of Rio Bravo Boulevard. Broadway is closed in both directions in that vicinity.BCFR personnel received an emergency call about the fire around 6:30 p.m. and have since been working to contain the blaze and stop it from spreading. BCFR spokesperson William Harris said the cause of the fire is unknown. Fifty firefighters and 19 units from BCFR and Albuquerque Fire Rescue have the fire surrounded and do not expect it to spread. Paper is what was burning at first, but that has moved into aluminum and other recycled materials, he said.For now, smoke is blowing away from houses, but if alerts are issued, people in the path of smoke should shelter in place, close windows, and shut off HVAC/air conditioning system. Black smoke and any other smoke from the fire may be harmful, Williams said.No injuries of firefighters or workers have been reported.This is a developing story.
