A new Preakness Stakes champion has been crowned. Napoleon Solo took the title on Saturday at Laurel Park in Maryland, holding off a late charge from Iron Honor and Chip Honcho down the stretch.

The 151st running of this race saw the favorite, Taj Mahal, jump out to a big lead out of the starting gates, but the horse could not hold that lead once they hit the back stretch. Taj Mahal finished a distant 10th.

It opened the door for Napoleon Solo (7-1) to make a break for the inside line and take the blanket of Black Eyed Susans in the winner’s circle.

The win for Napoleon Solo netted a massive payday for owners with Gold Square LLC, head trainer Chad Summers and jockey Paco Lopez.

Let’s take a look at how the purse split breaks down as well as the payouts from the race.

2026 Preakness Stakes purse

The purse for this year’s Preakness Stakes was $1.2 million, one of the highest payouts all year in horse racing. The rest of the field split that number based on finish position. It looks like this.

First: $1,200,000 (Napoleon Solo)
Second: $400,000 (Iron Honor)
Third: $220,000 (Chip Honcho)
Fourth: $120,000 (Ocelli)
Fifth: $60,000 (Incredibolt)

Traditionally, 80% of that goes to the horse’s owner (or owners), while 10% goes to the trainer and the final 10% goes to the jockey.
