Car goes airborne during wild Wisconsin chase

Authorities in Wisconsin released dramatic dashcam and bodycam footage of a chase that occurred on May 9, resulting in one man’s arrest.Just after 9 a.m., the Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office said they were notified that a trooper with the Wisconsin State Patrol was on a traffic stop and was requesting backup for a driver who had a felony warrant for failure to appear in court for a stolen vehicle case. There was also a caution indicator for the driver.As an additional deputy and trooper arrived on scene, the suspect drove off from the traffic stop.The sheriff’s office said deputies lost sight of the vehicle until another deputy found it speeding near an exit on Interstate 41. The driver briefly stopped at the top of the off-ramp, but then went in reverse until it was able to turn north. A chase then began.According to the sheriff’s office, the chase went through a business’s parking lot and onto another road. The suspect eventually drove back onto I-41 and eventually got off at another exit. The driver lost control and went into a ditch, traveled up the embankment and went airborne, ending up in a field. No other vehicles were involved in the crash.The driver and a passenger in the vehicle ran away, prompting a short foot chase. The sheriff’s office said a Taser was used to take the driver, Dewayne Stokes, a 44-year-old Milwaukee man, into custody. He was out on a $5,000 signature bond for a stolen vehicle. Stokes was taken to a hospital for minor injuries before being booked into the Fond du Lac County Jail.The sheriff’s office said Stokes is being held on multiple charges, including fleeing and eluding an officer, first-degree recklessly endangering safety, felon in possession of a firearm.There was no property damage due to the chase, the sheriff’s office said.
