Household hazardous waste needs to be disposed of with care.Fortunately, Alex Bukoski, spokesman for the city’s Solid Waste Management Department, says they have it well in hand.”It’s the City of Albuquerque Solid Waste Management partnering with Keep Albuquerque Beautiful, offering folks a chance to get rid of some of those difficult to dispose of items,” Bukoski said. “Things like some old gasoline. Or you get old paint sitting around, paint thinners, all that kind of stuff that’s clogging up your garage,” Bukoski said. “We want to make sure they get disposed of properly because when they go into our normal waste-stream, they can pose big hazards, not only to our drivers and trucks, but at our landfill. It can contaminate our water, our air. We want to make sure they’re being taken responsibly.”Bukoski said lithium ion batteries are especially problematic. “The’ve exploded everywhere. They also explode in our trucks,” Bukoski said. “When they’re crushed, when they’re in intense pressure, they can spark a fire really quickly. It poses a great threat to our drivers.”The event at Balloon Fiesta Park was assisted by Clean Harbors.”They’ve got really great trained workers,” Bukoski said. “They’ve got all that safety precaution ready to go. They’re making sure it’s contained, and they’re making sure it gets to where it needs to be for its final resting place.” Hazardous waste can also be taken to the SWD Safety Clean facility on Girard Boulevard, open from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday.
