Amy Grant’s Mom’s Final Breath Inspired a Powerful New Song

Date:

Amy Grant released The Me That Remains, her first album of original songs in 13 years, on Friday (May 8).

The record features 10 exceptionally written and sung tracks which reveal what Grant has been up to over the past decade, including life events she hadn’t yet shared with fans.

Grant recently spoke to me on Taste of Country Nights, where I asked her about a particular song on the record called “The Other Side of Goodbye.” And boy, was I taken aback when she told me the true inspiration behind the tune.

Amy Grant’s ‘The Other Side of Goodbye’ Is About Her Mother

Grant says the end of her mother’s life inspired her to write “The Other Side of Goodbye.”

“She was in hospice care at our house for the last three weeks of her life. But hey, we’re all gonna die, ya know?” the singer explains.

“I think my mom was so much a part of my life, and no kidding, the last thing she did was [takes a deep breath]. And she had been unresponsive for the last 24 hours,” Grant shares.

“No kidding, the first thing I did was grab my phone and tried to take a picture of her face. Not everybody dies that way, but she did and that song just tries to capture that,” the musician adds.

Grant’s mom still influences her daily life even after passing in 2010.

“It’s so funny, for years, anytime I pass by somebody redoing a house, like some major renovation, this old Southern voice comes to mind: ‘You can redo it all you want, we’re still gonna die,'” Grant says.

The Me That Remains is out now.
