Rio Arriba County assessor candidate charged with DWI

A candidate for the Rio Arriba County Assessor has been arrested on a DWI charge. According to a criminal complaint, an officer from the Espanola police department responded to a call for a motor vehicle crash in the area of 311 McCracken Lane. The crash occurred on a roadway where a dark-colored sedan had hit a light pole, and the driver was outside of the vehicle yelling at people. The officer identified the driver of the vehicle as 51-year-old Josie Valdez, a Democratic candidate for the Rio Arriba County Assessor. Valdez told officers she had a “margarita or two.” She declined a breathalyzer test and was arrested after failing a field sobriety test. Valdez posted a statement on Facebook regarding the incident.”I take full responsibility for my actions and acknowledge that I fell short of the standard you deserve from someone seeking public office,” she said. “My commitment to Rio Arriba County and its people remains strong. I care deeply about this county, the families who live here, and the future we are working to build together.”Valdez is being charged with Aggravated DWI.
