Farm’s Derby Day benefit has the glamour with a distinct twist
Proceeds from the festive party will help adults with developmental disabilities.
Derby Day is different at Mandy’s Farm. For instance, there’s no thoroughbred horse racing (except on TV).The annual event draws a big crowd of partiers dressed to the nines amidst the variety of animals, all to raise money for a very good cause. Lauren Stoops, a barn assistant, said working there has given her a great appreciation for the animals, as well as enjoyment from the break from her usual duties, which can vary from day to day. “I’m with the goats,” Stoops said. “We are just making sure everything works and flows. It’s a big event and there are lots of things happening, so we are making sure that everyone is taken care of.”So what’s so different about Derby Day at this farm in New Mexico? “We’re racing goats, kind of like the Kentucky Derby,” Stoops said. “It’s a good break, and it’s a good time, where volunteers can come out, and workers have a good time while doing our jobs.”Proceeds directly support Mandy’s Farm’s mission to empower individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities through supportive housing, meaningful employment, and community connection.
