Very hot temperatures with record heat across New Mexico this week

Date:

We are getting a break in the monsoon this week with much drier and hotter weather moving in. High temperatures will likely break records for parts of New Mexico this week.

Much drier air has moved into New Mexico this weekend, bringing even drier weather to the state today. There is still some moisture in place across eastern New Mexico, but a growing area of high pressure overhead is keeping the state hot and dry. Temperatures today are climbing into 90s and triple digits. A couple isolated storms are possible in far southeast and northeast New Mexico. A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect until 10 PM for Union County.

Even hotter weather moves in Tuesday as high pressure settles into the state. The high pressure system will keep the entire state hot and mostly dry. Temperatures will continue to hover near record levels through at least Friday, with a few locations across the state breaking record highs each afternoon starting Wednesday. Temperatures around the Albuquerque Metro could hit 100° as early as Tuesday afternoon, with a higher chance through the rest of the week. Heat Advisories will likely be issued each afternoon through at least Friday. There is a good chance the Metro will set a record high of 100° on Friday.

A few spotty afternoon storms will be possible across some of the mountain peaks beginning Wednesday afternoon. Rainfall accumulations will generally be light and most of the rain may even evaporate before reaching the ground.

More monsoon moisture will work its way into the state starting this weekend, bringing rain chances back as early as Saturday. They will also help to cool high temperatures off a couple degrees into early next week.
