[1] Family of 19-year-old bicyclist killed in crash calls for change – An Albuquerque family is calling for change after their 19-year-old daughter was hit and killed while riding her bike home. Kayla Vanlandingham’s parents said Kayla was riding her bike along the Hahn Arroyo Trail when she was struck and killed by a car. This incident brings the total to nine bicyclists hit and killed by a car in the New Mexico this year. Kayla’s mother is calling for infrastructure updates, mandatory stops, statute changes, and policy changes.
[2] Ruidoso flooding moves Futurity trials to Albuquerque – For the second consecutive year, the All American Futurity is being held in Albuquerque due to flooding that forced the races out of the Ruidoso Downs racetrack. Officials explain that the All American Futurity for quarter horses is equivalent to the Kentucky Derby for thoroughbreds. The trials begin Monday at 11:00 a.m. at the Albuquerque Downs and will conclude on Tuesday.
[3] Rain-free for most of New Mexico & hotter this week – Dry and hot weather will stick around into the week ahead. A stretch of triple-digit heat will continue across southern New Mexico as well though next weekend. While almost all of New Mexico will stay dry, a pop up storm or two will be possible across some of the mountain peaks.
[4] Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham addresses rural hospital fund on Face the Nation – Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham appeared on “Face the Nation” to discuss the importance of Medicare and Medicaid for New Mexicans. Medicare and Medicaid Services Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz says applications for a new rural hospital fund will open in early September. Lujan Grisham said the US should focus on connecting people to healthcare and that the fund is not enough. The Medicaid director of New Mexico confirmed with News 13 that nearly 34% of the state is on Medicaid.
[5] Pecos All-American Cheerleaders to represent New Mexico on global stage – A group of cheerleaders from the village of Pecos in San Miguel County is representing New Mexico on an international stage. Their skill and dedication to their sport catapult them to a global stage to perform at the New Year’s Day Parade this winter in Italy. The team is looking to raise $25,000. For those interested in supporting these teens as they look to reach their goal, they have a GoFundMe page.
