Corey Kent has a couple of No. 1 songs under his belt, and his song with Koe Wetzel, “Rocky Mountain Low,” is currently climbing up the charts — but life as an artist for Kent hasn’t always been this good.
Kent dropped by the Taste of Country Nights studio, where he spoke to me about how he got his start, playing in a band that got to open up for the Oak Ridge Boys back when Kent was only 11 years old.
However, he did not get to meet them at that time.
Fast forward a few years, Kent was back in Nashville networking and his manager — who also managed the Oak Ridge Boys at the time — asked him for a favor.

Kent said, “What I thought was going to be like a networking thing ended up being me essentially being the assistant to the Oak Ridge Boys for the day.
“They were like, ‘At 4:30AM we need you to go to the Cracker Barrel and get some biscuits.'”

Kent says he ran into an issue when it was time to get the biscuits.
“Where I’m from, there’s one of everything. If there’s a Cracker Barrel, there’s only one,” he explained. “So I went to the wrong Cracker Barrel to get the Oak Ridge Boys biscuits at 4:30AM.”

Kent said that he did get to meet them that time around, and they were exceptionally kind to him.
He ended the story by letting me know that the Oak Ridge Boys are true gentlemen, as well as legends.
“They were very complimentary of our band; we were just a bunch of kids playing Western Swing music, and anyone playing Western Swing was probably 70 years older than us.”
