Fire weather watches are back on Saturday, very strong winds return Sunday
Early morning temperatures are a big step colder, especially across northern New Mexico, so plan on needing a jacket as you head out the door. Later this afternoon we will look for sunny to partly cloudy skies with temperatures climbing into the 60s and 70s, with warmer 80s still in place across the south. Now winds today will definitely still be noticeable, but it will be gusts in the 20-35 mph range around the state which is a considerable step down from yesterday’s powerful gusts.Saturday will be another day with the noticeable but not necessarily powerful gusts in the 25-35 mph range, and areas of extreme fire danger are expected to develop again over eastern and southern New Mexico. An approaching storm system will bring the chance for some rain and mountain snow late in the day to northwest New Mexico and the 4-Corners area. Highs around the state will once again have a pretty big spread with 60s and 70s across the north, whereas southern New Mexico will climb well into the 80s to near 90.Then on Sunday that next storm will create those very powerful wind gusts again and likely result in another round of Red Flag Warnings for the extremely dangerous fire weather conditions. Wind gusts will range anywhere from 35-45 mph over northern New Mexico, to 45-60+ in the southern part of the state. Wind damage will be a concern, especially in the southern mountains. While that goes on down south, the northern half of the state could see some much-needed rain and mountain snow move through.Looking ahead to next week, Monday and Tuesday are looking like dry and quieter days with lighter breezes, then we will watch for more much-needed rain chances to return. Scattered showers and thundershowers will become possible on Tuesday, and a better chance of rain could be in play for Wednesday. We’ll keep our fingers crossed!
