A mobile app is helping travelers discover more than 16,000 unusual tourist attractions along the 2,448 miles of Route 66, from classic landmarks to quirky roadside oddities. Doug Kirby, co-founder of Roadside America, said, “We kind of come in from the side where we cover the offbeat places, the sort of humorous places, maybe intentionally or unintentionally funny.” Kirby explained that the app is “sort of an outgrowth of the work we’d already been doing for the last 15 years with the Roadside America app.” The app features attractions across all eight states along Route 66, including New Mexico.In Albuquerque, Kirby said, “It’s got the largest massive attractions. I just checked; it’s got 78 or 79 in our database, which is more than any other city on Route 66.” Albuquerque’s rich and diverse history contributes to its appeal, with attractions like the Nuclear Science and History Museum, a rattlesnake museum, and sites related to the TV show “Breaking Bad.” “You get to go see the tombstone of Walter White, and there’s a little market of people who all wanna go to all the locations that are from the show,” Kirby said. Kirby emphasized the collaborative nature of celebrating Route 66, saying, “There are a lot of other guidebooks, paper guidebooks, and apps out there, and we kind of view ours as where could be an ingredient.
