Cultivating a love of lavender is Albuquerque farmers’ passion
At Joe’s Farm, they not only grow lavender, they also encourage others to grow lavender for themselves.
If you smell the lovely scent of lavender while driving along Rio Grande Boulevard, it’s not your imagination. At Joe’s Farm, Joe Ornelas and Lisa Fontanarosa not only grow lavender and make products with it — they also encourage their patrons to grow lavender for themselves. Their lavender plant sale over Easter weekend sold out quickly, but they will have more ready to go next weekend in their three varieties — Grosso, Phenomenal, and Provence. “We know that there’s a love of lavender out there,” Ornelas said, “and the fact that people are getting additional advice on how to plant; they appreciate it.” There’s more to lavender than the beautiful blooms and scent, Fontanarosa said. “Gardens are the embodiment of hope, and we need hope and calm. Lavender is calm. It’s magical. It’s intoxicating, and we all need a bit of calm,” Fontanarosa said. “And as I say, plant the beauty, harvest the calm.”Ornelas takes it a step further, saying that lavender is, in fact, a way of life. “It’s our way of contributing back to the community in which we live, because this lifestyle is unparalleled,” Ornelas said. “It’s very easy.”
