Deputies in Chaves County are investigating an illegal cockfighting ring involving chickens.Deputies say the investigation stems from a tip that was called into the Chaves County Sheriff’s Office, which provided the address and possible suspects.They say one of the suspects is an alleged business owner and deals in the organization of events and renting venues. 3 individuals have been identified as the primary suspects. More than 100 individuals who were in attendance and originally detained have now been arrested. They have not been identified at this time.Deputies say during the course of obtaining the search warrants, approximately 20 individuals attempted to flee from the scene by running from the property, through a field, behind the residence. All individuals were apprehended, detained and transported back to the scene.CCSO Deputies & Detectives are still on scene executing additional search warrants & amended search warrants and several agencies are also now involved due to the size and length of time of the operation.Several items of evidentiary value have been seized such as: Electronics, ledgers, safes, documentation, laptops, hard drives, roosters & cockfighting equipment.They say the case is still early in the investigation and will be updated as additional information is learned.
