FREE KOAT APP. AND REMEMBER TO TURN ON ALERTS. WELL, TONIGHT, SANTA FE PUBLIC SCHOOLS TAKING SWIFT ACTION TO REMOVE CESAR CHAVEZ’S NAME FROM AN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL. THE BOARD VOTING UNANIMOUSLY FOR THAT. AND NOW IT WILL BE CALLED WHITE TIGER’S ELEMENTARY. TEMPORARILY. ALIYAH CHAVEZ WAS IN THE ROOM WHEN DECISIONS WERE MADE. THIS DECISION COMES AS SERIOUS ALLEGATIONS AGAINST THE LATE LABOR LEADER CONTINUE TO SPARK OUTRAGE, INCLUDING ACCUSATIONS THAT HE SEXUALLY ABUSED MULTIPLE WOMEN AND GIRLS. I WOULD MOVE THAT WE IMMEDIATELY REMOVE THE NAME CESAR CHAVEZ, ONE OF NEW MEXICO’S LARGEST SCHOOL DISTRICTS, MOVING THURSDAY NIGHT TO STRIP CESAR CHAVEZ’S NAME FROM ONE OF ITS ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS. ALL THOSE IN FAVOR, SAY AYE. AYE. LET’S ALL SAY THEY SHOULD DETERMINE THE NAME OF THE SCHOOL, NOT US. MEMBERS OF THE SANTA FE PUBLIC SCHOOL BOARD CHOOSING TO INSTITUTE A TEMPORARY NAME, WHITE TIGERS ELEMENTARY, SAYING CESAR CHAVEZ’S NAME WILL BE REMOVED IN THE COMING DAYS AND A TEMPORARY SIGN WILL GO UP SOON. I DON’T KNOW WHAT THE NAME SHOULD BE, BUT MAKING SURE THAT WOMEN ARE HONORED IN THAT PROCESS. MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC URGING SCHOOL LEADERS TO GO FURTHER, CALLING FOR A SOCIAL JUSTICE AND EDUCATION CENTER TO BE CREATED AT THE CAMPUS, A PLACE WHERE STUDENTS AND COMMUNITY CAN LEARN ABOUT THE FARM WORKER MOVEMENT, ORGANIZING SF SUPERINTENDENT CHRISTINE GRIFFIN WILL FORM A COMMITTEE TO CHOOSE A NEW NAME FOR THE SCHOOL. AN EXACT TIMELINE ON A NEW NAME ISN’T CLEAR. THE PRINCIPAL OF NOW, WHITE TIGER’S ELEMENTARY, TOLD THE BOARD THAT IT WOULD BE GREAT TO START A NEW SCHOOL YEAR NEXT FALL WITH A NEW NAME. The Santa Fe School Board voted unanimously Thursday night to remove Cesar Chavez’s name from one of its elementary schools, temporarily renaming it “White Tigers Elementary” amid serious allegations against the late labor leader.The board emphasized that the renaming process should be led by children and members of Santa Fe’s southside community. A weatherproof temporary banner will be put up soon, and the name “Cesar Chavez” will be removed in the coming days.
