DWI suspect arrested after fleeing NMSP checkpoint
Juan Torres, 22, refused to be tested for alcohol or drugs, and had an a felony warrant for violating probation.
An attempted stop at a DWI checkpoint Friday night initiated a chase that ended with the arrest of a 22-year-old man on multiple charges, including driving while intoxicated, a New Mexico State Police social media news release said. Around 10 p.m., a black Kia drove at high speed through the checkpoint near the Interstate 25 north frontage road and Camino De Salud. NMSP officers chased the Kia through several red lights before stopping it on Interstate 40 east. The driver of the Kia, later identified as Juan Torres, tried to switch seats with a passenger. He refused to follow commands and said he was armed, although it turned out he wasn’t. NMSP officers, assisted by Albuquerque Police Department officers, were eventually able to take Torres into custody, the release said.Torres was belligerent, appeared to be intoxicated, and had an open container in the vehicle. He refused to be tested for alcohol or drugs, and police also found out he had a felony warrant for violating probation, the release said.After being taken for medical clearance, Torres was booked into the Metropolitan Detention Center, charged with aggravated DWI (refusal), aggravated fleeing of an officer, resisting/obstructing, open container, no driver’s license, and concealing identity, as well as on the felony warrant charges.
