The Mexican wolf population in New Mexico has increased with 33 new wolves this year, bringing the total to more than 300 in the wild and moving the species closer to being downgraded on the endangered species list.Ranchers in parts of Catron County can now legally kill a Mexican wolf, thanks to a new permit from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The animal has to be found in this area, either on private or federal land, and must be attacking, wounding, or killing livestock.The permit allows the killing of only one wolf from now until April. If the animal is killed before the expiration date, the permit ends.
