Six schools in Albuquerque to begin requiring clear backpacks

Five middle schools and one high school in Albuquerque will require clear backpacks when school resumes from winter break on Jan 6. According to Albuquerque Public Schools, Wilson Middle School, Kennedy Middle School, Hayes Middle School, Washington Middle School and Cleveland Middle School are implementing a policy that will require students to bring clear backpacks onto campus. Del Norte High School will be implementing the backpack policy change in the 2026-2027 school year. The policy will go into effect for the above listed middle schools on Tuesday, Jan. 6.APS says the move is aimed at enhancing safety and security at each of the schools. APS will provide clear backpacks to students for free at each of the schools.The decision was made by the instructional council at each school following a community survey.
