Alexandra Kay Found a ‘Second Wind’ With a New Album, New Man

Alexandra Kay has never been one to utter four little words used with such frequency in the entertainment business that they’ve lost meaning: “Please respect my privacy.”

Sure, she has boundaries, but fans on social media know her to be one of the most candid singers in music.

“You know, it’s just part of me,” she shares, “and I think it’s really cool because it’s why fans run up to me at shows and they’re like, ‘I feel like we’re best friends.'”

The policy has been tested.

In 2023, Kay released her debut album All I’ve Ever Known. It was written about her divorce from a man she spent a decade with, and at times the vulnerability was jarring. Fast forward two years and she’s dropping another album called Second Wind.

It’s about a guy, but fans already know that.

“Yesterday was my first day off in months,” Kay tells Evan Paul during this week’s Taste of Country Nights, On Demand interview (full video below). “My manager texts me first thing in the morning and she said, ‘No working today. Like, enjoy being your little nerdy self.'”

“And then of course what I was doing was I was, like, journaling all day and of course I had to be recording it all. You know, it’s it’s a part of me now where, like, I share everything with them, even on a day where I promised Rocco and I promised Beth I wasn’t gonna work.”

“I honestly used to tell everybody that he was my little brother. I was like, ‘Rocco’s like my little brother.’ Very, very weird. Very weird ’cause there is a five-year age difference between us.”

With one exception (“Better Off” serves as a transition), Second Wind is about falling in love again. Specifically it’s about falling in love with Rocco Beall, her longtime guitarist. They’ve worked together for years when all of a sudden she started crushing on him.

“And then, you know, he let it happen too, but And then I started to, you know, I guess just realize how different the two relationships were,” the “Straight for the Heart” singer says. “Rocco just makes me feel so safe and so taken care of. I don’t have to ask to feel loved or appreciated or, you know, any of those things. Like, he just does it.”

The 14 new songs explore her professional renaissance but the title is apt to her career as well. For the better part of a decade, Kay was one of country music’s most successful independent artists. Then, Jelly Roll happened.

He brought her on the Beautifully Broken Tour, but that was just the start of it. After her opening set she’d return to cover Toby Keith‘s “Should’ve Been a Cowboy” with Jelly Roll. Then, he’d step back to let her sing a cover of Shania Twain’s “Man! I Feel Like a Woman.”

“And then after that he would come out and put his arm around me and be like, ‘This girl is independent and she deserves a record deal.’ He changed everything for me,” Kay says.

Officially, Kay signed with Jelly Roll’s record label in early 2025.

But he let the news slip from the stage in Nashville late last year. It’s a secret she was surely excited to share with fans.

“Feminine Energy” and “Old Me” are two more songs Kay says fans have really responded to. “What He Does” is the most direct comparison between the new man in her life and the old. Much like Kelsea Ballerini’s Roll Up the Welcome Mat album inspired Kay to leave a bad relationship, she’s learning about fans who take her music to heart.

The compliment is a double-edged sword because nobody ever wants to cause a divorce.

“People say that to me all the time,” Kay shares. “I’m like, ‘I’m sorry? I don’t know how to respond to that.'”

“They’re like, ‘I left him because of you.’ I’m like, ‘Is that good? Are you happy with that decision?'”

Second Wind drops Oct. 24. In 2026 she’ll tour with Old Dominion and play select headlining shows and of course, fans on social media will be the first to know about them.
