More rainfall in New Mexico with damper conditions

Date:

NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – Damper air has spread west but is especially present across the Central Mountains through East New Mexico with sporadic storms moving to the northeast. Behind the storms, east-gap winds are a little bit gusty farther west, including from the East Highlands into the Rio Grande Valley once again, while some fog is developing in the northeastern valley floors to eastern parts of the region.

Around-freezing temperatures are confined to the Northern Mountain peaks to the far-northern to western valley floors, while elsewhere is mostly starting off in the 40s to the 60s.

Lower pressure aloft from the west is near the Four Corners, and in combination with a drop in the jet stream having already met up with the low-level moisture from the east, more precipitation is in store for today. Many areas in the mountains will receive rainfall with wet snowfall in the higher-mountain peaks in Northern New Mexico to Colorado, while thunderstorms will form from the Rio Grande Valley to the east. Flash flooding is still possible with some pockets of hail with the gustier winds.

More clouds before any precipitation will allow afternoon temperatures to reach slightly below normal. High temperatures will mostly range in the 60s and low 80s, except for northern highly-elevated areas through the Northeast Highlands which may not get out of the high 50s despite being slightly warmer than yesterday, while far-southern to southwestern areas will be in the low-to-mid 80s.

Low-level moisture has arrived at the surface from the east as the pendulum swing pattern of somewhat-muggy mornings out east with breezy easterly winds shifting to southwesterly drier winds in the afternoons forming storms to the east will still continue. The fall system will then move away as calmer winds will then settle in later this week with more sunshine gradually returning with higher temperatures eventually.
