ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. —

A 10-year-old boy is being accused of killing a 17-year-old girl during a fight outside an Albuquerque apartment complex on Halloween.

Albuquerque Police (APD) said Officers responded shortly after 6 p.m. Saturday to reports of a fight and shooting on Tennessee Street near Central and Pennsylvania.

“What we know at this time is that there was a neighbor dispute over loud music. At one point in time, neighbors went next door to advise their neighbor to turn down the music,” APD Chief of Police Cecily Barker said.

The argument escalated into a physical fight outside the apartment complex, according to authorities.

“At some point in time, a 10-year-old came outside and tried to get his mother out of that physical dispute. He went back inside and he exited the apartment with a firearm. We know that he fired one round, which struck a 17-year-old who was deceased on scene,” Barker said.

Police said the boy’s mother then took him inside an apartment and called 911.

As officers arrived, they heard a gunshot inside the apartment. Police said the mother came out armed, and an officer fired but did not hit anyone.

“A female can be seen coming to the door with a firearm, and at least one officer discharged his firearm,” said Barker.

The mother dropped the gun and surrendered, police said.

Albuquerque police are investigating the girl’s death, while the multi-agency task force is investigating the officer’s gunfire.

Chief Cecily Barker said the boy’s age presents unique challenges.

“We have only seen this in other circumstances with a juvenile who was involved with robberies. The detention center does not take 10-year-olds, so we will update you as far as what is going to happen with his status as this investigation goes on,” Barker said.

No officers were injured in the incident.

This is still a developing story.
