Johnson has hosted the popular basketball program since 1990, one year after it premiered. In a social media video, Johnson said it was his decision to step away.
“It’s just time,” he said.
Johnson explained that long hours prepping for the show, along with some recent health complications, including recovering from a heart bypass surgery 14 months ago, contributed to his decision. He added that he wants to spend more time with family.
“Going through (heart surgery) has made me treasure even more every second with my amazing wife of 44 years, Cheryl Ann, and being poppy to our five grandchildren,” Johnson said. “So I just want to slow down a bit. Spend more time enjoying that.”
Johnson made clear that he wasn’t retiring entirely. He said he plans to keep covering “March Madness and other projects” and focus more on his new production company.
Several former players have appeared on “Inside the NBA” alongside Johnson over the years. However, Johnson, Shaquille O’Neal, Charles Barkley, and Kenny Smith have become the show’s iconic panel.
