Kaitlin Butts Wants to Help Fans in Toxic Relationships

Date:

A lot of country fans first met Kaitlin Butts in 2024, courtesy of her then-viral hit “You Ain’t Gotta Die (To Be Dead to Me).” In those lyrics, she’s confident, quippy and makes it sound downright fun to leave the toxic people in your life.

“You Ain’t Gotta Die” introduced Butts to fans as a pretty tough customer, and her role as the mean girl in Ella Langley‘s “Choosin’ Texas” corroborated that story.

Butts recently admitted to Taste of Country that her band mates will tell you that the persona is based in real life. Simply put: The no-BS-taking lyrics of “You Ain’t Gotta Die” aren’t false advertising.

Butts also wrote “You Ain’t Gotta Die” about a real situation from her personal life, and you don’t get to be self-assured enough to release a song like that without a lot of healing and processing.

Fans who tuned in in 2024 might not know it, but Butts wrote her pain and heartbreak into her songs.

Her 2022 What Else Can She Do album is, essentially, nothing but processing. It’s full of songs about women pinned down by bleak circumstances and their journeys toward freeing themselves. A haunting cover of “In the Pines” hammers home the point.

One song, “Blood,” even feels like the painful prequel to “You Ain’t Gotta Die.” In it, Butts describes a relationship with a family member who belittles her, drags her down and expects her to hide haunting family traumas — all in the name of blood.

During a recent interview with Butts, I asked her to confirm or deny a theory I’ve got about that song:

Did Kaitlin Butts Write “You Ain’t Gotta Die (To Be Dead to Me)” and “Blood” About the Same Person?

Yes. And those aren’t the only two songs Kaitlin Butts wrote about this situation in her life.

She wrote “Blood” with Angaleena Presley during one of her first co-writing sessions in Nashville, and though neither of them knew it walking in, “she and I were both dealing with narcissistic personalities,” Butts remembers.

In her live shows, she groups “Blood” and “You Ain’t Gotta Die” close together in the set, along with another What Else Can She Do track called “It Won’t Always Be This Way” that she wrote domestic violence, sung from the perspective of a mother promising to get her daughter out of a bad situation.

“I really want people to know that if you’re dealing with somebody like that — [who] makes you feel really isolated, and tries all these narcissistic tactics to manipulate and isolate you, make you feel small, cross your boundaries, gaslight you — all those things are meant to make you feel like you can’t escape that situation,” Butts says.

Kaitlin Butts Doesn’t Think Singing Country Songs About Family Estrangement Should Be Taboo

Family estrangement can be an unpopular topic in country lyrics. Some of the best-loved classics in the genre are about the importance of preserving family ties.

But unpopular and uncommon are two different things. Butts says it’s important to her to give voice to a kind of heartache that many listeners experience but are too ashamed or scared to speak about.

“The more I talk about it, the more someone might decide to leave an awful situation,” she points out.

It’s an emotional topic for the singer, who teared up as she recalled a female fan who once came up to her merch table after a show, got quiet for a minute, and said, “Your songs just made me rethink my entire life.”

“It’s not that I want people to leave their husbands,” Butts continues. “But I do want people to realize that it really is that simple to leave if you are in something that is bad for you.”

“They make you feel isolated and so scared to leave, but they are the ones that are scared,” she says through her tears. “The moment that I released myself of that person and got off their roller coaster was the day my life completely changed and got better.”

Kaitlin Butts’ “You Ain’t Gotta Die (To Be Dead to Me)” Is a Self-Confidence Mantra for Fans Facing Tough Situations

Kaitlin Butts didn’t share specifics about her own story.

But “It Won’t Always Be This Way,” “Blood” and “You Ain’t Gotta Die” focus on different chapters of her journey out of a harmful family relationship. She hopes those songs will offer the tools listeners need for different stages of their own journeys.

“I wanna give those people, with ‘Blood,’ knowing that they’re not alone…and have that internal signal of, ‘This is bad, I shouldn’t have to feel this way,'” she says.

“And then you get to the other side of it and you have this mantra of ‘You Ain’t Gotta Die (To Be Dead to Me).’ This person doesn’t have to die, you don’t have to murder them, but this person can just be dead to you, and you don’t ever have to speak their name again. How freeing is that?” the singer continues.

“That’s my goal, with every show,” Butts adds. “That if there’s one person that feels validated and feels a lightbulb in any kind of way, I’ve done my job.”
