“Not your typical estate sale find—” police recovered an atypical object that was purchased from an estate sale in Texas, prompting the presence of one department’s bomb squad.
VIDEO: Scene shows police, bomb squad at Texas estate sale
In a post from the Austin Police Association, a resident bought some boxes at an estate sale and, while going through them, found what appeared to be World War II-era grenades.
The bomb squad confirmed the grenades were “live and active.”
“Huge thanks to our patrol officers, who quickly secured the scene, set up a perimeter, and kept neighbors safe while they waited for EOD,” the police association said in the post. “Handling 80-year-old explosives with unknown stability is dangerous, precise work, and they do it with the professionalism this city counts on. The devices were safely seized and removed.”
Authorities said no charges were filed, but the incident serves as a reminder that if you come across “old military ordnance, contact local officials” and don’t handle the objects on your own.
