30 years later: The Hollywood Video Murders

Date:

It’s a crime that shook New Mexico 30 years ago. Multiple people were killed at the Hollywood Video Store in Albuquerque in 1996. 30-year-old Myliyn Daothi, and teenagers Zachary Blacklock and Jowanda Castillo were forced onto the floor of a storage room and shot in the head in what was to initially be a robbery. After those three were killed, Zach’s grandparents drove up to the store to give him a ride home and were carjacked, taken into the east mountains and killed. It took almost a week before the suspects were identified as Shane Harrison and Esther Beckley. In an interview with Action 7 News in 2003, Beckley says she and Harrison planned to rob the Hollywood Video store on March 3, 1996 to get money and impress her lover. “There wasn’t supposed to be anyone hurt,” Beckley said.Beckley claims in the interview she helped tie up the store workers before Harrison sent her out to distract the grandparents. She claims that’s when the store workers were shot. After assuming the working inside were dead, Beckley followed Harrison as he forced George and Pauline McDougall to drive to the east mountains. When they got to the east mountains, Beckley says she tried pleading with Harrison not to hurt them. Harrison refused. Beckley says Harrison then shot them with two different guns. Years later, Beckley plead guilty to the murders saying she couldn’t stop Harrison.
