Rory McIlroy, Joe LaCava clear air after Ryder Cup argument

MONTESELLO, GIDONIA, Italy — European star Rory McIlroy and American caddy Joe LaCava met to clear up a misunderstanding ahead of their Ryder Cup singles match on Sunday, a day after they played at 18 The disagreement on the green spilled into the parking lot of Marco Simeone Golf Club.

According to NBC Sports, LaCava, Patrick Cantlay’s caddy, sent a text message to someone on McIlroy’s team on Saturday night.

“Love you guys and I have nothing but respect,” LaCava reportedly wrote in the text message.

McIlroy was unhappy because LaCava stood motionless on his putt line. LaCava waved his hat as he celebrated Cantlay’s 43-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole. Cantlay’s three consecutive birdies helped him beat McIlroy and England’s Matt Fitzpatrick by one in the final four-ball match.

Television cameras later captured Ireland’s Shane Lowry pushing McIlroy into a car while McIlroy yelled at someone in the parking lot. Caddy Jim “Bones” McKay stood nearby. “This can’t happen. This can’t happen. It’s a fucking disgrace,” shouted McIlroy, who caddies for American Justin Thomas.

Reports in British media on Saturday suggested that Cantlay was one of the reasons for a schism in the U.S. team, unhappy that U.S. players were not being paid to play in the Ryder Cup. Reports suggested Cantlay was not wearing his team-issued hat in protest, but he denied this.

Many European fans mocked Cantlay by waving their hats at him during Saturday afternoon’s game. After Cantlay made his final putt, he pretended to doff his hat to the crowd. Other American players, caddies and team members also waved to European fans.

“Patrick made three great putts at the end to finish the match, so hats off to them,” McIlroy said after the game. “They played a great game and yeah, I mean, some of the scenes in the 18th just added fuel to the fire for tomorrow.”

McIlroy plays Sam Burns in the fourth singles match on Sunday.
