Pursuit, crash in Tempe lands shooting suspect in hospital

A shooting in Mesa resulted in a suspect being chased and crashing his vehicle, police said.

PHOENIX — A man was taken to the hospital after a confrontation with Mesa police, authorities said.

Mesa police officers were dispatched to a house near Dobson and Baseline Roads on Saturday just before 11 p.m. for reports of a fight and someone with a gun. As officers drove to the scene, multiple people called to report shots fired, and the shooter remained in a dark-colored car, police said.

Police spotted the suspicious vehicle and attempted to pull it over, but the vehicle did not stop. Police chased the car into Tempe, where it crashed near Baseline Road and McClintock Drive, police said.

The suspect, a 21-year-old man, was driving the car and then fled the scene.

The suspect ran from McClintock Drive along Baseline Road. Officers tried to catch up to the suspect driving in the same direction, but the suspect then turned and ran toward police, police said.

As the suspect ran by, an officer stopped and tried to use a Taser, but was unsuccessful, police said.

Another officer then struck the suspect with his patrol car, police said. According to police, the suspect reached for his waistband before officers struck him. The vehicle then collided with a tree.

The suspect was treated for his injuries at the scene and was later taken to a hospital for further treatment. Police said he is in stable condition.

Police said the suspect will be jailed and face multiple felony charges upon his release.

Police said no officers or civilians were injured in the incident.
