Canelo Alvarez shuts down potential fight with Terence Crawford: ‘He’s not in the plan’

Canelo Alvarez wants a bigger challenge, so fighting an opponent three weight classes below him doesn’t seem to qualify.

Those were the words spoken by the 33-year-old undisputed super middleweight champion after his lopsided victory over Jermell Charlo on Saturday night. Immediately after Canelo’s win, there were calls for a fight with Terence Crawford, who is widely regarded as the top fighter in boxing right now.

As a welterweight, Crawford will be giving up 21 pounds – and Canelo doesn’t seem to want to show off his reputation by consistently beating smaller opponents.

“You know, I always say if the fight makes sense, why not? But he wasn’t in the plan,” Canelo said when asked about Crawford at Saturday’s post-fight press conference. “Like I said, if it makes sense, maybe. I don’t know right now. I just want to enjoy the fight. Then you’ll know what happens next.”

Throughout his career, Canelo has continued to gain weight to take on bigger, more difficult challenges. It seems like that’s what he wants right now, especially after defeating a junior middleweight like Charlo.

Over 12 rounds, Canelo bullied Charlo in the ring while landing ferocious and powerful combinations to the head and body. Canelo knocked down Charlo in the seventh round, and Charlo ended up spending most of the fight in survival mode.

“I think this happens to a lot of boxers,” Canelo explained. “My mindset wasn’t just to survive. But I did my job. I don’t think he ever did anything to win.

“That was my plan. To neutralize everything he was going to bring. He’s a left-handed guy and I was trying not to get hit. Sometimes there’s not much a boxer can do in the ring.”

With his latest win, Canelo hopes he can silence some of the doubters who claimed he was past his prime after a lackluster performance against John Ryder.

Of course, Canelo suffered a hand injury in that fight, but now that he’s healthy, the Mexican superstar promises he’ll be back and better than before.

“My hand is 100 percent in good shape and feels good,” Alvarez said. “I feel good and I’m still in my prime. I feel fresh and I’m ready.

“I think it’s Canelo. I’m back. Finally, I’m back. I’m confident now. I feel great. I’m happy because I haven’t felt like this in a long time. Now I’m back.”
