Source – Pittsburgh to start QB Phil Jurkovec vs. Hokies

Pittsburgh will start veteran quarterback Phil Jurkovec on Saturday night against Virginia Tech, a week after he lost to UNC on an illegal hit at Pitt, according to ESPN sources A week away from the competition.

Jurkovic was injured in the second quarter against North Carolina State and his status for this game is uncertain. Jurkovic missed the rest of the game, with sources saying the injury was a lower-body injury as he was both illegally hit and tripped by a horse collar in the same game.

Jurkovec is a sixth-year senior quarterback who returns to his hometown of Pittsburgh for his final year after stints at Notre Dame and Boston College.

He has been up and down this season, completing 11 of 15 passes against North Carolina before the injury. He struggled last week against West Virginia against a porous offensive line, finishing with three interceptions and just 81 passing yards.

He has completed 51.1 percent of his passes this year with four touchdowns and three interceptions.

Jurkovic maintained his starting job through a tough stretch and caught his first seven passes against UNC. Pitt’s offensive line was down three players expected to start, including star tackle Matt Goncalves, and the offense struggled accordingly.

Pitt (1-3) has lost three straight games, including a 41-24 loss to North Carolina in its ACC opener. Virginia Tech (1-3) has also struggled with injuries and has lost three straight.
