Rep. Jamaal Bowman triggered a fire alarm as House voted on bill

As they evacuate, House Democrats are working to delay a vote on a 45-day appropriations bill to keep federal agencies open.

WASHINGTON — Democratic Rep. Jamaal Bowman acknowledged triggering a fire alarm in an office building at the U.S. Capitol on Saturday as lawmakers scrambled to put out the blaze. Pass a bill to fund the government before the midnight closing deadline.

A fire alarm went off in the Cannon House office building around noon, prompting an evacuation of the building, while the House of Representatives was in session and staff were working inside the building.

The Republican-controlled House Administration Committee, which oversees matters at the Capitol, released a photo of the person who sounded the fire alarm, who appeared to be Bowman. The commission posted the photo on X, the site formerly known as Twitter, and said the incident was under investigation.

A spokesman for the New York congressman said in a statement to The Associated Press that the congressman was rushing to get to the House floor but did not intend to trigger the building’s alarm.

“Members of Congress regret any disruption,” the statement continued. His office did not provide further details.

As they evacuate, House Democrats are working to delay a vote on a 45-day appropriations bill to keep federal agencies open. They said they needed time to review the 71-page bill that Republicans suddenly released to avoid a government shutdown.

The funding package was ultimately approved on a 335-91 vote Saturday afternoon, with most Republicans and nearly all Democrats, including Bowman, supporting the bill.

After the vote, Republicans including House Speaker Kevin McCarthy criticized Bowman’s fire alarm. Some lawmakers have even floated the idea of drafting a motion to expel him from the House.

“This should not go unpunished,” McCarthy told reporters. “It’s embarrassing.”

He added that he planned to speak with New York Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries to figure out a possible response.
