Orioles reliever Felix Bautista to undergo Tommy John surgery

BALTIMORE — Baltimore Orioles reliever Felix Bautista will undergo Tommy John surgery next month and will miss the postseason and possibly the entire 2024 season.

The 28-year-old right-hander was placed on the 15-day disabled list on August 26, one day after he was injured against the Colorado Rockies.

“Once we get the injuries out of the way, it’s a long-term conclusion,” general manager Mike Elias said Saturday.

Elias also said that Bautista has agreed to a two-year contract. Bautista will be eligible for salary arbitration after the 2024 season.

Bautista had hoped to return to the postseason, Baltimore’s first since 2016. The AL East champion will open the Division Series on October 7.

“To Felix’s credit, bless his heart, he realized there might be a window where he could keep his arm throwing, up and running,” Elias said. “But we ran out of time to make this a viable and successful option for the playoffs, and it no longer made sense, so we went ahead and scheduled surgery. Nothing has changed or happened the past few weeks that he’s been throwing.”

Bautista was 8-2 with a 1.48 ERA and 33 saves in 39 opportunities. The first-time All-Star struck out 110 of 237 batters.

“He should return to Félix Bautista in the spring of 2025,” Elias said.
