Diamondbacks eyeing spot in MLB playoffs

D-backs’ playoff hopes rest on final three games of regular season

PHOENIX — The Arizona Diamondbacks are headed to the MLB playoffs for the first time since 2017. The Arizona Diamondbacks will play a three-game series against their rivals in downtown Phoenix this weekend, with the team’s playoff chances hanging in the balance. The Houston Astros start Friday.

The D-backs have been competing for a National League wild-card spot for weeks, but they retain their second of three National League wild-card spots heading into the final series of the regular season. The D-Backs look to maintain their slim lead in the standings over the Miami Marlins, Chicago Cubs and Cincinnati Reds, all three teams playing on the road this weekend. Arizona’s magic number dropped to two runs in the series against the Astros, a team expected to clinch the third and final American League Wild Card berth this weekend.

Given the playoff implications and unique schedules, both clubs at Chase Field are likely to host champagne celebrations this weekend. This will be the first time these two teams have met all season, with both teams winning their recent series. Arizona’s 2023 season has been a roller-coaster ride that has included the rise of rookie Corbin Carroll, the team parting ways with the likes of Madison Bumgarner and Nick Ahmed, an inexplicable slump, and An all-star performance.

Now, for the first time in six years, D-Backs fans can see that the playoffs are coming, and the final three games of the season are huge.
