Casa Grande man convicted of murdering innocent bystander

In 2021, Brian Robinette was shot several times while trying to break up a fight between a man and his girlfriend in Casa Grande.

PINAL COUNTY, Ariz. — A Casa Grande man who shot and killed a bystander who tried to break up a fight between the defendant and his girlfriend was sentenced to 28 years in prison Thursday.

A Pinal County jury found Giovanni Olivieri, 24, guilty of second-degree murder, endangerment and disorderly conduct in connection with the fatal encounter. The incident occurred on September 4, 2021, outside the Radisson Hotel in Casa Grande.

Olivieri reportedly got into an argument with his 19-year-old girlfriend in the parking lot, which escalated to him grabbing the young woman by her hair and neck. Pinal County Prosecutor’s Office.

During the argument, 35-year-old Brian Robinette ran across the parking lot trying to get Olivieri to release his girlfriend. Olivieri then fired eight shots at innocent bystanders. The couple fled the scene and Olivieri was later arrested by police in front of his girlfriend’s home.

The victim leaves behind two children.

A jury convicted Olivieri of multiple felonies and misdemeanors, and he was sentenced this week by the Arizona Department of Corrections. The defendant will be subject to community supervision upon release from prison.
