Windy weather through the weekend across New Mexico

Zoe’s Friday Morning Weather Forecast

NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – It will remain hot across the state on Friday, with temperatures 5-15° above average for late September. The first week of fall has been warm, but changes are coming as a storm system approaches the desert Southwest this weekend. Additional moisture will arrive this afternoon, leading to the potential for storm formation at higher elevations south of I-40 early this afternoon. The storm will move quickly to the north/northeast, potentially bringing a round or two of storms to Albuquerque and Santa Fe late this afternoon and evening.

More showers and storms are expected across the state Saturday, primarily along and east of the Continental Divide. The heaviest rainfall will be in the east, with burn scar flash flooding in the central mountains a major concern. Temperatures will drop a few degrees on Saturday and further on Sunday, with continued rain likely in far eastern/northern New Mexico. Windy weather will continue this weekend, especially in the West, where the air will be dry and wind gusts will be 35-55 mph.

Temperatures will continue to cool early to mid next week, with temperatures reaching overnight lows and daytime highs across the state. The arrival of October will be even more timely and feel like autumn. There will also be a chance for more rain next week, but the amounts and specific locations are uncertain at this time. Either way, it’s definitely going to feel more like fall by next week.
