When will we know if the government is shutting down?

(NEXSTAR) – Lawmakers still have time (but not much) to avoid a government shutdown. The deadline is approaching and Congress appears to be deadlocked.

Lawmakers have until the clock strikes midnight Saturday night (or early Sunday morning, depending on how you look at it) to reach a deal. Otherwise, it will trigger a government shutdown.

We may not know for sure until the last minute before the deadline whether there will be a government shutdown. Negotiations have been in the final stages for the past few years.

On Thursday night, the Associated Press reported that a government shutdown was “almost inevitable.”

Although the Senate has proposed bipartisan measures Until Nov. 17, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy was still trying to heal the divisions within his party.

“Put your money on me; we’re going to get this done,” McCarthy said in an interview with CNBC. “I think we can work all weekend. I think we can figure this out.”

If a government shutdown comes, millions of federal employees will be furloughed and many others—including those who work in the military and the Transportation Security Administration—will be forced to unpaid work Until the end.

The ripple effects will depend on how long the shutdown lasts and the varying emergency plans in place at affected agencies.
