John Lineker motivated to regain title, hopes ONE Championship opens door for boxing matches

John Lineker returns to Singapore for ONE Championship on Friday as he looks to put a stop to Stephen Loman’s 11-fight win streak and get another shot at the belt.

He’s also expressed interest in a different challenge: The former ONE bantamweight champion wants to test his “stone hands” inside the squared circle.

His latest nemesis Fabricio Andrade is due to fight Muay Thai champion Jonathan Hagerty for the ONE kickboxing belt later this year, and Lineker hopes the company will allow him to try boxing too.

“Now that ONE has given us the opportunity (to compete in other sports), I have no reason not to take advantage of it,” Lineker said in an interview with MMA Fighting. “I hope to participate in other sports in the future. If there is an opportunity to participate in boxing, I will be happy.”

Until then, Lineker’s only focus is on collecting wins on his way to the title he once held. Lineker, who recently bounced back from a loss to Andrade, with a wild third-round knockout of Kim Jae-woong in August, believes his fight with Loman should be a number one contender’s match Contest.

“I believe the winner will definitely fight for the title, but I’m focused on having a good game right now,” Lineker said. “It gives me more motivation to go out there and let me know 100 percent that I have a chance to fight for the title. (The win over Kim) gets me back on track and I plan on fighting for the belt again with a win over Loman.”

Lowman is a former Brave CF Champion with a 17-2 record in the sport, having finished three flawless fights to date under the ONE banner, defeating the company’s most successful champion in his most recent outing Bibiano Fernandes, Lineker knows what to expect from him. Lineker said his recent loss to Andrade taught him an important lesson, which is not to always assume that his opponent will step up and trade with him.

“He’s very versatile and tough,” Lineker said of Lohmann. “He moves his feet a lot and has excellent footwork and striking ability. I think I need to be patient and alert with his movements and takedown attempts. Based on my study of Lowman’s game, he doesn’t use his feet to fight I trade, he’s going to try to knock me down and use his ground and punches, but I’m focused and ready.”

“I’m going to keep going out there looking for knockouts, like I’ve always done,” he added. “That’s the type of fight I love, putting on a show for the fans.”
