Canelo Alvarez, Jermell Charlo both weigh in at 167.4 pounds

LAS VEGAS — Canelo Alvarez and Jermell Charlo both weighed in at 167.4 pounds on Friday, one day before they fight for Alvarez of four 168-pound titles.

Boxing’s top star Alvarez will defend his undisputed super middleweight title for the third time in Las Vegas on Saturday, while Charlo will compete above 154 pounds for the first time.

The 33-year-old Charlo was the undisputed junior middleweight champion, but he gained 14 pounds for the biggest opportunity of his career.

Jermell wasn’t even Charlo’s original opponent. The first named against Alvarez was his twin brother Jermall. Jermall is the bigger Charlo and holds the WBC title at 160 pounds, but he has not fought since June 2021 due to personal reasons. So Gemmell stepped in.

“They look the same,” Alvarez, 33, told ESPN on Wednesday. “Same size, same everything. I don’t care which of Charlo’s brothers that is.”

“I think he can handle the weight as well because he’s taller,” added Alvarez, who is 5-foot-8 to Charlo’s 6-foot. “He’s strong…I think (the extra weight) will be good for him…maybe he’ll have a hard time getting to 154.”

Charlo (35 wins, 1 draw, 1 loss, 19 KOs) won the undisputed junior middleweight title with a 10th-round knockout of Brian Castano in a rematch in May 2022. Their first game was a draw.

Charlo was scheduled to make his first title defense in January against Australian star Tim Tszyu, but Charlo withdrew after suffering a broken left hand in training camp.

Alvarez (59-2-2, 39 KOs), ESPN’s No. 4 ranked pound-for-pound fighter, is coming off a unanimous decision victory over John Ryder in May.
